Y-250 Front Wing Manufacturing
- Where
- UW Formula Electric
- When
- October 2025
- Remodeled the Y-250 front wing for UW Formula Electric in SolidWorks, translating aerodynamic concepts into fully manufacturable geometry.
- Analyzed load paths, thickness, and mounting constraints to balance aerodynamic performance with structural integrity.
- Iterated the wing geometry to ensure compatibility with chassis mounting points, fasteners, and manufacturing tolerances.
- Manufactured the front wing through multiple carbon fiber composite layup sessions, including machining, cutting and wrapping the carbon fiber, ply placement, epoxy resin application, and vacuum bagging.
Results
- Designed and created the team’s first inward-swept, cambered front wing flaps.
- Performed well under FEA and SolidWorks stress simulations, achieving a Factor of Safety of 2.3 under a 1500 N downforce load, validating the design.
- Combined CAD, simulation, and manufacturing to create a structurally sound, real-world component.
